A simpler way to loosen a tight clave at home.
Tonya, an Oley Foundation ambassador, shows how she uses Yewtwist on her central line and her feeding tube, in place of a can gripper.
The challenge
Tonya manages a central line at home. Claves can get very tight, and when one would not come off, she used to reach for a can gripper.
Nurses and patients who handle their own central lines know the problem well.
How she uses it
Yewtwist is not sterile, so Tonya cleans it every time she uses it:
- Clean Yewtwist with antiseptic spray and alcohol swabs, for as long as she would clean around her central line at a dressing change.
- Line up the groove that fits the connector best. There are three to choose from.
- Pinch the arms together and turn counterclockwise. The connection releases.
“Now that I have this, it is much easier to keep clean and it is smaller and it comes with its own bag.”
The result
Tonya can now loosen a tight clave herself, at home, without reaching for makeshift solutions or asking for help. Her line connections are easier to handle, and her daily care routine puts less strain on her hands and wrists.
